The Scent of Summer: How Fragrance Has Always Been Part of Seasonal Living

Have you ever noticed how summer has a scent of its own?

Freshly cut grass. Washing drying on the line. Wildflowers on a countryside walk. Citrus drifting from an open kitchen window. Warm evenings when everything seems to slow down.

Long before room sprays and scented candles existed, people recognised the distinctive scents of each season. During summer, fragrant herbs, flowers and plants were gathered from the surrounding landscape, bringing the freshness of the outdoors into homes and places of worship.

Even today, many of us naturally swap richer winter fragrances for lighter scents inspired by the season, from citrus blossom and blooming florals to fresh linen and coastal air.

Fragrance and the Summer Harvest

As we move towards Lughnasadh, the first harvest festival in the Wheel of the Year, nature is at its peak. Meadows are alive with wildflowers, gardens are overflowing with colour, and herbs are ready to be gathered.

Across Britain and Europe, summer was traditionally the time to harvest aromatic plants such as lavender, rosemary, thyme and mint. They were dried for cooking, medicine and household use, woven into garlands, hung inside homes and sometimes burned as incense during seasonal celebrations.

These fragrant plants were part of everyday life, valued for both their practical uses and their place in seasonal customs.

The Stories Behind Summer Scents

Many plants associated with summer have long carried their own folklore.

Lavender was often linked with peace and protection, rosemary with remembrance and cleansing, while flowers commonly symbolised joy, renewal and prosperity. Across different cultures, fragrant plants were believed to offer comfort, celebrate important occasions or simply mark the changing seasons.

Many of today's favourite summer fragrances still draw inspiration from these plants and landscapes. Citrus captures warmth and sunshine, wildflowers evoke blooming meadows, while fresh linen and coastal notes reflect open windows, sea breezes and long summer days.

Those ideas became the inspiration behind my Summer Room & Linen Spray Collection, celebrating some of the scents that have shaped the season for generations.

Why Smell Brings Back Memories

Of all our senses, smell has one of the strongest links to memory and emotion.

A single fragrance can instantly remind us of somewhere we've been or a moment we've experienced. Citrus might bring back memories of holidays in the sun. Floral notes can remind us of gardens in full bloom, while the scent of fresh linen drying outside often recalls warm afternoons and open windows.

Scientists believe this happens because the brain processes smell very closely alongside the areas responsible for memory and emotion, making fragrance one of the most powerful triggers for nostalgia.

Bringing Summer Indoors

Seasonal living doesn't have to involve elaborate rituals.

Opening the windows on a warm morning, displaying flowers picked from the garden, drying freshly harvested herbs or choosing a fragrance inspired by the season are all simple ways to reflect what's happening outdoors.

Whether your home smells of citrus blossom, wildflowers, sea air or fresh linen, even small seasonal touches can help create an atmosphere that feels bright, fresh and unmistakably summery.

Before the Wheel Turns

Lughnasadh reminds us that the landscape is always changing.

The flowers won't bloom forever. The herbs will soon be harvested. Before long, autumn will arrive with its own colours, scents and traditions.

Perhaps that's why seasonal fragrance has remained part of our homes for so long. It allows us to capture something that can't be kept forever, the feeling of a particular moment in the year.

For now, summer is still here. The gardens are full, the evenings are warm, and the scent of the season is all around us.
