What is a Birth Chart Reading?

What is a Birth Chart Reading?

You may already know your zodiac sign, but this is only one part of your astrology.

At the moment you were born, the Sun, Moon and planets were positioned within different zodiac signs and areas of the sky. A birth chart records those positions, creating a map that is unique to your date, time and place of birth.

A birth chart reading is the interpretation of that map.

Rather than simply listing your planetary placements, an astrologer examines how the different parts of your chart connect and explains what they may mean when viewed together.

What Is the Difference Between a Birth Chart and a Birth Chart Reading?

Although the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, a birth chart and a birth chart reading are not quite the same thing.

Your birth chart, also known as a natal chart, is the circular chart showing the positions of the planets when you were born.  A birth chart reading is the interpretation of the information contained within it.

When you generate a chart online, you may see a wheel filled with signs, symbols, numbers and lines. You might discover that you have a particular Moon or Rising sign, but this does not automatically explain what those placements mean for you or how they relate to the rest of your chart.  A reading takes those individual pieces and brings them together into a clearer, more connected interpretation.

If you would like to learn more about the three best-known placements, you can read my guide to your Sun, Moon and Rising signs.

What Information Is Needed for a Birth Chart Reading?

To calculate your birth chart, three pieces of information are usually required:

✦ Your date of birth ✦ Your time of birth Your place of birth

Your birth time is particularly important because it is used to calculate your Rising sign and house placements. These can change throughout the day, so an inaccurate birth time may affect parts of the chart.

You may find your birth time on your birth certificate, although it is not included on every UK birth certificate. If it is not recorded, a parent or family member may remember approximately when you were born.

If you do not know your birth time, it may still be possible to interpret some of your planetary placements. However, your Rising sign and houses may not be accurate, so it is best to check with the astrologer before ordering.

What Does an Astrologer Examine?

Every astrologer will have their own approach, but a birth chart reading will usually consider a combination of planets, zodiac signs, houses and aspects.

Planets: Each planet is associated with a different part of your personality and experience. For example, the Sun is connected to identity and self-expression, while the Moon relates to your emotional world and instinctive needs. Mercury is associated with communication, Venus with relationships and personal values, and Mars with motivation and action.

Zodiac signs: The zodiac sign occupied by a planet helps describe how that planet’s qualities may be expressed. This is why knowing only your Sun sign provides a limited picture. Each of the planets within your chart can occupy a different sign.

Houses: A birth chart is divided into 12 houses, with each one connected to a different area of life. The house occupied by a planet can show where its influence may be most noticeable, such as within relationships, home, work, creativity or personal development. In my readings, I use the Whole Sign house system. This means that each zodiac sign occupies one complete house within the chart.

Aspects: Aspects are the connections formed between planets. They help show how different parts of the chart interact. Some may support one another naturally, while others can reveal tension or apparently contradictory needs. An astrologer considers all these elements together, looking for repeated themes, important connections and patterns across the complete chart.

How Is a Birth Chart Reading Created?

The first step is to enter your birth details into specialist astrology software. This calculates your chart and shows the exact positions of the planets, houses and aspects at the time you were born.

The interpretation is then completed by the astrologer.

For my written readings, I begin by examining the individual placements within your chart. I then look at how they relate to one another and identify the themes or patterns that appear across the chart as a whole.

Your interpretation is written individually using your birth chart. I do not use AI-generated interpretations or copy automated descriptions from chart software. Once the interpretation is complete, it is arranged into a professionally presented PDF booklet. This gives you a structured reading that you can work through in your own time and return to whenever you wish.

What Happens When You Order a Birth Chart Reading From The Inner Hearth?

My Birth Chart Readings are completed entirely online, so you do not need to attend a live appointment or video call. The process is straightforward:

1. Choose your reading: Select either a Birth Chart Overview or a Complete Birth Chart Reading, depending on how much detail you would like.

2. Provide your birth details: When placing your order, you will be asked for your date, time and place of birth. You can also include anything you would particularly like me to be aware of while interpreting your chart.

3. Your chart is calculated and interpreted: I create your natal chart and personally examine the placements, houses, aspects and wider patterns included within your chosen reading.

4. Your reading is written: Your interpretation is written in clear, accessible language, without assuming that you already understand astrology.

5. Your completed PDF is emailed to you: Once finished, your reading is sent directly to your email address within the turnaround time shown on the product page.

The Birth Chart Overview provides an introduction to the main foundations and themes within your chart. The Complete Birth Chart Reading offers a much more detailed exploration of your planetary placements, houses, aspects and wider chart patterns.

You can view both options on my Birth Chart Readings page.
